“Interno Marche: Celebrating 60 Years of Italian Design Excellence in Tolentino”
Tolentino, June 25, 2024 - Interno Marche has officially opened its doors in Tolentino, marking the culmination of a profound cultural initiative that spans the rich history of Italian and international design over the past six decades.
Conceived and led by Franco Moschini, the visionary entrepreneur known for his influential role at Poltrona Frau Group, Interno Marche is the brainchild of Holding Moschini SpA. Over a meticulous three-year construction phase, the project transformed the historic Art Nouveau Villa Gabrielli, restoring its iconic frescoes and integrating industrial-era workshops and ancient tanning vats.
Covering 3,600 m2 across a main building and annex, complemented by 1,500 m2 of gardens, Interno Marche offers a distinctive blend of spaces. These include a lounge bar, a bistro restaurant, a spa, and 30 meticulously designed rooms, including five long-stay suites. Each space immerses guests in the worlds and atmospheres crafted by renowned designers such as Michele De Lucchi, Marc Newson, Gae Aulenti, Vico Magistretti, Giò Ponti, Roberto Lazzeroni, Nendo, and others, reflecting five influential 20th-century stylistic movements: Viennese Secession, Arts & Crafts, Radical, Pop, and Modernism.
Interno Marche serves as a unique hotel-museum, showcasing over 400 pieces of furniture, installations, and artworks that trace the evolution of design history. A “digital vault” accessible via strategically placed QR codes enhances the experience, offering deeper insights into the cultural significance and creation of each artifact.
Guests at Interno Marche can seamlessly transition between spaces: from Giò Ponti’s essential shapes to the playful world of Front, from Michele De Lucchi’s materiality to Gae Aulenti’s vibrant colors. The accommodations range from Massoni’s round bed under frescoed ceilings to Thonet’s 19th-century thalamus, and from Lazzaroni’s leather-clad room to eri&Hu’s wooden haven, offering a kaleidoscopic journey through eras and atmospheres.
The lobby, breakfast room, and lounge bar are housed in the expansive three-bay hall, once the bustling heart of the factory’s production. The bistro restaurant features a menu bridging local traditions and international cuisine, while the spa and gym offer relaxation and wellness amidst the gardens.
Embodying Italian Excellence
Interno Marche celebrates the essence of “Made in Italy” craftsmanship, a hallmark synonymous with quality, innovation, and design. It showcases the heritage of Italian design excellence through collaborations with leading brands such as Poltrona Frau, Cappellini, Cassina, Zanotta, and others. These partnerships underscore Interno Marche’s commitment to preserving and promoting Italy’s rich cultural legacy in design.
The Team Behind Interno Marche
Franco Moschini, recipient of the Compasso D’Oro Award, envisioned Interno Marche as a cultural initiative aimed at enriching and promoting the local area. The project was executed by a dedicated local team led by ORAstudio’s young engineers and architects, supported by consultants, restorers, geologists, agronomists, 3D designers, lighting experts, interior designers, and photographers. Over three years, around 2,000 professionals contributed to a project emphasizing architectural integrity, environmental sustainability, and respect for the local heritage.
The Design Terrae Foundation, championed by Moschini, embodies values of “beauty, goodness, and craftsmanship,” central to his entrepreneurial ethos.
Franco Moschini states: “This land has always been my home, providing resources for my entrepreneurial endeavors. I aim to give back through culture, knowledge, and guidance for future generations—a catalyst for progress. I believe in sharing what one receives, fostering positive growth. My vision is to inspire great projects and a prosperous future.”
Carlo De Mattia, CDO of Moschini Spa, adds: “Interno Marche encapsulates 60 years of design history in 30 uniquely designed rooms—a journey within a journey. Breathing new life into Villa Gabrielli, a bastion of history where Nazareno Gabrielli founded his heritage brand and Poltrona Frau emerged, enables visitors to experience the extraordinary in the ordinary.”
Architects Cristiana Antonini and Claudio Tombolini of ORAstudio remark: “Enhancing a symbolic building like Interno Marche was both an honor and responsibility. Our sustainable reconstruction approach earned the project dual Gbc Historic Building and LEED V4 for Hospitality certifications—setting a global benchmark for blending aesthetic and technical prowess.”
