In Madrid’s vibrant urban landscape, a pioneering architectural project redefines age-appropriate and intergenerational living. Designed by Ignacio G Galán and OF Architects, Beyond the Family Kin Housing embodies principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and flexibility, reflecting a modern vision of community living.

This architectural gem was commissioned by an elderly couple and aims to adapt seamlessly to the needs of multiple generations. Instead of a traditional isolated family home, the design promotes an open, barrier-free concept that balances community and individual space.

Innovative Design with a Sustainable Focus

The home’s exterior is marked by a modern interpretation of the historic shed roof, adorned with a striking blue ceramic façade from Agrob Buchtal’s KeraTwin system. Paired with wavy steel panels, this façade provides not just aesthetic appeal but also energy efficiency. The ventilated ceramic structure ensures durability and can be easily adapted or dismantled, contributing to a sustainable architectural framework.

The shed roof’s operable windows, combined with automated blinds, enhance ventilation and natural lighting. Solar panels power the underfloor heating system, creating a self-sufficient energy loop throughout the home.

Energy Efficiency with Tiles and Underfloor Heating

Prioritizing energy efficiency, the home features underfloor heating paired with thermally conductive tiles. This combination efficiently regulates room temperature, reducing energy waste. Tiles also offer a cooling effect in warmer climates, making them ideal for Spain. The use of natural, high-quality tiles ensures a healthy and welcoming environment for residents of all ages.

Accessibility and Inclusive Design

Accessibility is a cornerstone of the Kin Family Housing project. Seamlessly integrated ramps, cascading gardens, and a spacious roof terrace promote inclusivity. The home features open and adaptable floor plans, facilitating a comfortable and secure experience for everyone, from toddlers to seniors. The innovative use of tiles eliminates architectural barriers, providing safe and unrestricted mobility.

By incorporating ceramic tiles as a fundamental design element, Ignacio G Galán and OF Architects have created a flexible, future-proof home that evolves with the needs of its residents.
