Tai Kwun Chairs: Emblematic Modular Design Blending Art and Architecture

Hong Kong, 2024-12-02 – The Tai Kwun Chairs by ARTA Architects represent a seamless fusion of art and architecture, harmonizing with the distinctive design languages of both ancient and contemporary architecture at the Tai Kwun Arts and Cultural Centre in Hong Kong.

Designed with an elegant, curving form, the chairs are ergonomically crafted to offer comfort while drawing inspiration from the floating boxes of modern architecture and the roofscape of the historical buildings. This modular furniture system is a perfect balance of iconic design and harmony with its surroundings.

Sustainability and Flexibility

Made from FSC-certified coloured wood, the Tai Kwun Chairs feature a gradient pattern that reflects a sustainable approach to design, adding a vibrant yet thoughtful aesthetic to the space. Each chair is equipped with a bespoke locking system, ensuring flexibility in seating arrangements—whether for large performances, small gatherings, or solitary moments. The chairs are designed to be easily stacked, allowing them to be stored efficiently or transformed into an impromptu work of art

Award-Winning Design

The Tai Kwun Chairs have earned recognition for their innovative design, winning the “Furniture of the Year” award at the 2024 FRAME Awards. These chairs are not just functional seating but integral to transforming the Laundry Steps at Tai Kwun into a dynamic event space, perfectly blending modern functionality with historic architectural charm.
