Taiyuan, China, 2024-12-05 – The Tai Kwun Whisky Bar, designed by JSPA Design, transforms a commercial podium in Taiyuan into a bold new gathering space, where modern architecture and traditional design harmonize. Set within a bustling real estate complex, the bar’s unique design integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, redefining the concept of public spaces.
Concrete as the Defining Material
At the heart of the Tai Kwun Whisky Bar is a cast-in-place concrete façade, chosen to create a lasting impact on the urban landscape. Opposing traditional commercial facades, this monolithic design brings texture and permanence to the structure, with the addition of three striking concrete arches that span two floors. The arches establish the project’s identity, while providing a robust and long-lasting cover for the existing building.
Creating a Dialogue with the City
JSPA Design’s approach emphasizes a strong relationship between the interior and the urban environment. The open bar layout, oriented toward the street, allows for a seamless connection between the bar and the city. A long concrete bench runs along the façade, offering seating for passersby, while folding windows create a physical connection to the street, transforming the space into a dynamic public area.
Intimacy and Architecture in the Upper Floor
The second floor presents a more intimate atmosphere, with a sculptural helicoidal steel staircase leading to a space where private alcoves are created by steel shelves and concrete arches. These elements showcase the architectural ingenuity behind the design while providing an ideal space for whisky bottle displays. A sense of privacy and exclusivity is achieved through the clever use of form and material, creating an immersive and sensory experience.
Materiality and Sensory Experience
The design’s materials evoke a strong connection to both the built environment and human interaction. On the first floor, gray brick flooring complements the concrete walls and ceiling, bridging the gap between the public space and the bar. To enhance the user experience, warm materials such as oakwood bar surfaces and leather-covered bench seats offer tactile comfort while balancing the rawness of the concrete.
